Thesis or dissertation are terms that are often used interchangeably, though some people refer to thesis applicable to a Master’s program and dissertation applicable to a PhD program. A thesis or dissertation is an original formal report on some original idea. In a master’s program a candidate is expected to gain knowledge and come up with ideas that are an application of the learned knowledge, whereas in a PhD program candidates are expected to create original knowledge or develop concept in a very specific area of specialization that others are able to utilize; hence the difference lies mainly in the extent of originality, detailing and depth, an MBA thesis can be maximum of about fifty to sixty pages whereas a PhD dissertation is usually of about two hundred pages. For example Porter’s five forces model made him famous due to its novelty, this can be considered a PhD or even higher level research ; using the five forces model many students in MBA conduct industry analysis and this can be considered as their Master’s level thesis or equivalent. A thesis or dissertation needs to be plagiarism free and presented as per prescribed criteria including writing style, format, structure, bibliography, references and citation. A thesis or dissertation idea needs to be supported by secondary (literature review) and primary research, analysis of data and enumeration of findings.
